Changes to Nova Scotia short-term rental rules

This log records each change to the Nova Scotia short-term rental rules published in our guides, newest first. It covers the Province's registration rules and every municipality's land-use rules, licences, permits, letters and marketing levies. Each entry gives a date, the municipality or the Province, and one plain sentence. Changes, newest first →

An entry is added when a rule's status moves (proposed, adopted, in force, repealed), or when its rate, its start or end date, or the by-law or regulation behind it changes. A change in who may rent which home under a municipality's land-use rules is logged too.

So is a change in who collects a levy on Airbnb, Vrbo or Booking.com, such as a platform starting to collect a municipality's levy at booking. That can happen without any by-law changing. When one change reaches many municipalities at once, it appears here as a single entry.

A proposal enters the log when its status moves, not at each council discussion. A re-check that finds nothing new isn't logged: it moves a guide's Checked date and leaves its Changed date alone.

When a change has a known start date, such as a levy adopted to begin later, the guides switch their wording on that day and the log records it under that date. We re-read its source shortly before then.

When we find we had something wrong, or find a rule we had missed, the fix is logged here with its date, like any other change. How corrections work. To tell us about a change we haven't logged, report it here.

Each municipality's guide carries its own "Changes to this guide" list: that municipality's entries plus the provincial ones. A municipality without a guide yet has no list of its own, so its entries appear here, each linked to its "Guide coming" row in rules by municipality.

The log starts when the first guides were published. Where a by-law was adopted or took effect before then, that date is shown with the rule rather than logged here.
